Five Loves on Friday // Simple Pleasures of Summertime & Freebies

Happy first Friday of July, friends!  It's been such a sweet week here.  Hope yours has been too!  Here are a handful of faves from mine...

One  //  Breakfast Date with my Love

My hubby and I enjoyed a yummy lakeside breakfast date on a peaceful morning earlier this week.  Just thinking about it makes my heart smile!  The weather was perfect, my bacon, egg & cheese on brioche from Panera was scrumptious, and the company was best of all!  Praise God for sweet little blessings and simple pleasures!

Two  //  Proud to be a Homemaker

Earlier this week Jason and I went to a clinic to get health assessments for our insurance.  As soon as a nurse called me out of the waiting room we began chit chatting.  A few minutes in she asked the inevitable question, "What do you do?"  I proudly shared, "I'm a homemaker."  I went on to tell her that I homeschool, etc..  Without skipping a beat she replied, "Can't think of anything else you'd wanna do?"  She did not mean this as a jab.  Our interactions from start to finish were friendly in tone.  I wasn't offended or surprised.  Over the years I've answered this question to many replies that expressed the same sentiment in different words.  I've heard everything from "I'd go crazy!" to "I'd pull my hair out!" or worse.  I, however, can't think of anything else I'd rather do.  It's my dream job and my heart's delight!

As I shared that story with Jason on our drive home I was reminded of a funny quote I saw during the pandemic when many people began spending their days at home and schools across America closed.

When I first saw this quote in 2020 it made me laugh, and at the same time also made me hopeful that there'd be more understanding of "what I do".  Yet, where there isn't, I won't be ashamed to answer the question.  My days are spent loving and serving this sweet family that God has blessed me with and I'm oh so grateful for that and for them!

Later that evening as I carried laundry to the bedroom to be folded I grinned at my husband and said, "Can't think of anything else I'd wanna do!" with a wink.  He smiled back at me and said, "I'm so glad."  :)

Three  //  FREE ebooks, audiobooks, movies, and music!

Recently I found an audiobook I'd been looking for (Total Truth by Nancy Pearcey) available to listen to free through the hoopla app using my local library card.  I couldn't resist sharing hoopla in my loves this week, in case you may want to check out this library app too. ;)  You can find everything from ebooks and audiobooks to movies and music there.  All you need is a local library card and you can enjoy fab finds digitally!

In the past I've also used the Libby app which is very similar.  I highly recommend both!

Four  //  Summer on a Plate

BLTs + corn on the cob is one of my all-time favorite summer combos!  We had it once for dinner this week and then again for lunch.   MmmMmmMmm!  What meal shouts summertime to you?  Whatever it is, I hope you enjoy it soon!

Five  //  Vintage Patriotic Tunes

adore vintage holiday music! This video featuring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller (and more) has me dancing into the long 4th of July weekend!

Thanks so much for spending a bit of your day here in my nook of the blogosphere!  Wishing all my American friends a fantastic Independence Day and everyone a wonderful upcoming weekend!

  2. Love, LOVE your thoughts about homemaking - hearing comments like the ones you listed (I would pull my hair out, etc.) is what inspired me to begin blogging years ago. And you're right, there is always something to do at home. :)

Corn on the cob is my second favorite food after South Carolina peaches. I actually just bought our first batch of corn this week and can't wait to have some tonight with supper!

So glad you're back to blogging - I've missed you! <3

  4. I always cringe when I am asked that question and I don't know why... especially when I've done both (worked outside the home when the kids were really little to blogging/homemaking now). Thanks for sharing that, it makes me realize how silly I am for cringing when asked it! Lol! I haven't had a BLT in ages and now you're making me crave one... and summer tomatoes and corn are the best!

  5. Sometimes I also hesitate when I say that I stay-at-home, but I have learned to be comfortable (and proud) of my role in the home. And we are both lucky to have husbands that appreciate and support that role. Hope you have a happy 4th!

  6. I agree with you about staying home! For me it's strange because I don't home school so what do I do when my kids aren't home? But I am ok with that. We are traveling now and my son downloaded hoopla for the ability to get a book with no wait!
