Magical Monday #3: Popcorn & Pixie Dust {Peter Pan Movie Party}

As promised, this Magical Monday I'm thrilled to share with you the fun of our
Peter Pan Family Movie Party!

Quick, what's the first snack that comes to mind when I say, "movie"? POPCORN! (That's my best guess for what you'd say, if not let's just pretend you did. ;)) This special occasion {the release of Peter Pan Diamond Edition, and 60th Anniversary of the film's theater release}, begged for more than an ordinary popcorn bowl. With that excuse, I headed to my favorite craft store. I filled my basket with inexpensive items like felt, scrapbook paper, ribbon ... & excitement for what these items would help to create for our next family movie party. With a little imagination and extra glitter pixie dust, those simple craft supplies were transformed into popcorn bags with character.

My youngest daughter, who I affectionately refer to as "Little One", LOVES creating stop motion videos. She joined me as I crafted Tinkerbell (her favorite), and created this WAY-TOO-CUTE stop motion video tutorial.
You'll wanna click "Play" immediately ....

Wasn't that fun?! If you enjoyed it please comment and let us know ... she'd be tickled to hear you appreciated her "work"! ;*)

Here's a closer look at each of the four character popcorn bags.
(At the conclusion of this post I'll share a brief summary of how I crafted each of them.)

MOVIE TIME!

Since "Peter Pan" begins in London, and concludes with Captain Hook wailing, "I'M A CODFISH!", I thought a fitting meal for our movie party would be fish and chips.

We laughed. We sang. We eat. Then we crafted ....
Here is our Happiest Things Poster Craft!

I glued Peter Pan's words onto a poster board, then covered with glitter. The construction paper I bought had a butterfly on the front cover so I used that as a template to create wings.

We sat with wide smiles as we wrote our favorite things upon the wings ... my daughters' giggles, Walt Disney World, swimming in our pool (when the summer sunshine returns), chocolate, crafting, teddy bears, the love of my husband, and the incredible grace of God ... our hearts were light, and our poster board filled with the happiest of things!

At our local movie theater, ushers wait outside the exit with baskets of mints. This was my version of after movie mints for this Peter Pan showing in our home theater:

It was truly a day to remember! Thank you for sharing in the joy of it. I hope you'll leave this Magical Monday inspired to create a simply magical time with your family too! These are the moments that memories are made of.

Now, think of a wonderful thought, any merry little thought ... & have yourself a fantastic week!

Here's a brief summary of how I created each of the character bags...

Tinkerbell: I first cut a sheet of green felt, fashioning it after her dress and glued it to the front of the brown paper bag. Then I cut small pieces of yellow streamer and glued them to the top front of the bag to create her bangs. For Tink's bun I wrapped a half a dozen cotton balls with yellow streamer and glued to the top back of bag. I picked up wings at the craft store that had ribbon attached in the middle, so I punched two holes in the back of the bag and ran the ribbon between the two, tying a simple bow to secure. Lastly, I rubbed a glue stick over the green felt, then sprinkled with glitter pixie dust, because of course Tink needs to sparkle!

Peter Pan: For Peter's clothing I used two different shades of green scrapbook paper. I first glued dark green to the bag to create his pants, then cut a sheet of lighter green scrapbook paper to glue over top to create his shirt. I cut two smaller pieces from the leftover sheet of light green paper, folded, and glued to create his collar. For his hat I used dark green felt, cutting a slit to stick a red felt feather into and used craft glue to secure to the top back of bag. A little brown cardboard belt and a simple knife created from yellow and white (shaded grey by pencil) construction paper finished off his look.

Wendy Darling: Wendy's dress and bow are made from blue scrapbook paper. I cut "sleeves" and glued them to the side of the bag, accented with blue ribbon at the bottom of each. I punched two holes in the back of the bag to run the ribbon from her dress through, and attached by tying a simple bow. For her hair and hair bow, I began by cutting the shape of a big bow from blue scrapbook paper and folded that in half. One half I faced forward, standing upright as her hair bow, the other half laid behind it. I poked two skewers through the flat portion of the scrapbook paper, then taped them to the back of the bag. This was the means of securing both her bow and hair to the bag. For her hair I looked at a picture Wendy and drew the shape of her bangs and back of her hair on a brown paper bag, then cut them out. I glued the back of her hair to the end of the blue bow, and her bangs to the front of it. Voila! Wendy Darling, Peter Pan expert (and my personal favorite), was complete!

Captain Hook: For Captain Hook I initially glued purple construction paper to the front of the bag for his pants (although they barely show through under his jacket.) I then cut a triangle from the middle of the top and bottom of a sheet of red felt, and glued it to bag. I embellished jacket with yellow streamers. A piece of white felt folded over in triplicate (securing each layer with craft glue) became his scarf. On the side of the bag I used a little more white felt for his cuff and a piece of construction paper completed the ensemble, with what else? A hook!

  4. Ok, why wasn't I invited to this? lol So, so cute and you're so creative!
As a side note - I have a similar popcorn maker that my brother got me for my birthday last year. I've never used it because I'm afraid it's going to be a pain to clean up. How do you like yours and is it easy to clean? I think this has inspired me to finally use mine. :)

    1. You need to live closer, Chrissy! hehe ;) ... Thanks for the sweet comment! You should totally use your popcorn machine! :-) I must admit it's not my favorite thing to clean (lol), but it's really not that difficult ... I'm just spoiled, as I don't wash many things by hand in general (ha!) ... I think it's worth the lit'l bit of extra effort...1/4 cup of popcorn kernels and 1 TBSP of popcorn popping oil and you have yourself delicious popcorn in no time:) ...and a big bag of popcorn kernels is sure a lot cheaper & goes further than those bags of microwave popcorn do! ;) ALSO, it somehow seems more festive popping it in a mini version of a movie theater concession stand popper too...or maybe that's just me?! teehee :*) Great to hear from you today, Chrissy!

  8. Okay, the only thing I want to ask right now is why you're not sitting in my living room with your kids reliving this party. What astounding work! The party sounded like an absolute blast, and you can let your kids know that they are the luckiest ones in the world. Grab some pixie dust and fly on over so we can do this again, together!
