Five Loves on Friday // Christmas Week Edition!

Happy Friday, friends!  I hope you've enjoyed a fantastically festive week.  We certainly have!  In the midst of a fun Christmas break with my loves I wanted to take a moment to quickly preserve the sweet memories of this week and share the highlights with you here!  Let's get right to the good stuff!

*This week's loves listed in chronological order.

One  //  Kicking Off Christmas with my Sweet In-Laws

We spent a very sweet Sunday afternoon celebrating Christmas with Jason's side of the family.  Jason put his smoker to excellent use smoking a ham for our lunch.  The meal ended with my sister-in-law's beautiful black forest cake.  Every bit and bite of the day was savored as our time together always flies by, yet is greatly cherished!

Before heading home we drove through some favorite neighborhoods for lights.  This just happened to be the perfect excuse for one more candy cane chill blizzard on the road.

Two  //  Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve morning my girls went to my parents to decorate sugar cookies that they rolled out with my mom earlier in the week.  "Princess" came home and helped me with some more sweets prep for Christmas Day.  We made Peanut Butter Ritz Ornament Cookies while singing our hearts out to K-Pop Christmas songs.  So much fun!

Peanut Butter Ritz Ornament Cookies
Spread creamy peanut butter on a Ritz cracker.  Top with another Ritz cracker creating a "sandwich".  Dip in melted almond bark.  Top with a mini Reese's peanut butter cup and decorate each "ornament" as desired.

Christmas Eve Night

Jason played guitar for our church's Christmas Eve service which is always such a wonderful time with our church family.  We enjoyed singing songs, rejoicing in God's goodness in providing our desperately needed Savior in Jesus who was "born that man no more may die, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth".  He was born to die for sinners like me, and through Him I have eternal hope for life beyond the grave.  There's no greater gift and celebrating it through worship, taking communion in remembrance of Him, and singing "Silent Night" in a room aglow with candlelight prepared my heart for Christmas.

(Pics taken during practice before service)

We returned home to a simple meal ready for us in the crockpot.  We chatted over dinner about our favorite Christmas memories and what we love most about Christmastime.  Normally we let the girls each choose and open one Christmas gift on Christmas Eve, but this year I took a different route preparing a family Christmas Eve gift.  I filled a bag with goodies I purchased at Disney World last month, two Christmas games, a Christmas movie, and new pajamas for all of us!

Three  //  Christmas Morning with my Loves

While I could share pics of all of the gifts my girls received, I'd rather share the gift I enjoyed most, the joy and surprise on their sweet faces as they opened gifts that were chosen with much care.  My mama heart overflowed that priceless morning!

After gifts we enjoyed breakfast and Disney's Christmas Parade.  We actually jumped in on the parade a bit late as we declared "presents before parades".  Wouldn't that make great band name? ;)

Four  //  Christmas Night

The time had come for the finale of all Christmas celebrations, Christmas at my parents'!  Each year they host such a wonderful celebration in their home.  The group that gathers there just happens to be made up of some of my favorite people on the planet which makes this one of my most anticipated gatherings of the year!  There is never a shortage of conversation, laughter, or love here.

Top Left: My niece, my nephew who was also celebrating his 17th birthday that day!, and my girls  | Top Right:  My dad, sister and her husband, my aunt and uncle, and my cousins and cousins-in-law  |  Middle Left:  My husband and our daughters |  Middle Right:  My parents and I  |  Bottom Left:  My sweet sis and I  |  Bottom Middle:  My girls  |  Bottom Right:  My sis, mom, and I

Five  //  Day Trip to KS & MO

One of my favorite Christmastime traditions of all is road tripping with my parents to hit after Christmas sales and see our favorite drive through light display!

Upon arrival we lunched at Chick-Fil-A, always a delicious idea.  Before long we were finding all those fun 50 - 75% off sales and filling bags with Disney deals, and sensational scents at Bath & Body Works.  Jason and my dad may have actually made two trips back to our Explorer so we didn't have to lug all our finds through the mall all afternoon.  (One of a million reasons they are my two favorite guys!)  Before long it was time to make our annual visit to IKEA.  We don't have one in our area and we absolutely love that place!  Anyone else with us on that?

Once we'd shopped 'til we dropped we made our way to the main attraction, Christmas in the Park!  This park turned winter wonderland boasts 300,00o lights including 175 animated displays that have snowmen tipping their hats to greet you, toy soldiers tumbling to the ground when gift boxes are fired out of a cannon at them, and more!  It's such a fun sight and brings out the childlike wonder in each of us!

Santa chilling in the hammock post-holiday always makes me smile!

Bonus Love  //  New Year's Anticipation

We always save our most anticipated holiday movie release for New Year's Eve.  This year that's Mary Poppins Returns!  I've been in full Mary Poppins mode here using my Jolly Holiday phone case and listening to my vintage soundtrack album.  I couldn't be more excited for a practically perfect New Year's Eve outing with my family to see the fun new flick!  Afterward we'll head home for a family game night during which I'll indulge in far too much deliciousness, delight in my daughters' laughter, and smooch my forever New Year's date at midnight!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!  Wishing you a beautiful conclusion to 2018 and a fun New Year's Eve celebrating the start of a fresh new year.  I'd love to hear about your NYE plans in the comment section below!

My Christmas Card to You!

Merry Christmas from my family to yours!

"Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light..."

The true meaning of Christmas makes my heart light year round, on fantastic days as well as heart wrenching ones.  It also causes my heart to overflow with gratitude to God for giving the only gift that is of eternal worth!

This video is shorter than the next Christmas song on the radio, yet it unpacks a gift of far greater value than any beautifully wrapped package tucked beneath our glowing Christmas trees...

Ru-Dough-lph the Truffle Nosed Reindeer // Christmas Donuts

Welcome to a fun, festive, and easy peasy breakfast post!  This "recipe" requires no baking, only a handful of ingredients, and minimal prep.  Yet, it is sure to put a smile on the face of both the young and young-at-heart!

As many of you already know, I'm a big fan of donuts.  When planning a girls Hallmark movie day this week I wanted a way to turn this simple favorite into a festive start for our sweet day.  A teensy bit of brainstorming later and I was store bound for ingredients to create Ru-dough-lph the Truffle Nosed Reindeer, Rudolph's distant and oh-so-delicious cousin. ;)

Ingredients:

Donuts

Pretzels

Milk Chocolate (red wrapped) Lindt Lindor Truffles

Candy Eyes
I found these with the cake decorating supplies at my local Walmart.

Chocolate Almond Bark (optional)

Steps to Sweetness:

Antlers
Break pretzels to create "antlers".  Stick pretzel antler pieces into the sides of the donut near the top.

Nose
Stick a truffle in the donut's center to create the nose.

Eyes
I used a dab of warmed chocolate almond bark to "glue" the candy eyes on, but you could gently press the candy eyes in place if you don't have almond bark on hand.

That's it!  Now you're all set to gather those "deer" to your heart and kick off the day in a holly jolly way!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Wishing you a sweet season!

A Sentimental Tour of My Favorite Christmas Ornaments

Merry Christmas Eve Eve, friends!  After coming out of hiatus, I've just got the blogging itch! So, today I'd like to invite you into my Christmasy home via this post.  Would you care to see some of my favorite Christmas ornaments from years past and our newest ornamental additions? Fantastic, because I'd love to show you around our Christmas tree!

Christmas Past

The first ornaments Jason and I received as a married couple...

My parents have the tradition of giving us a new ornament each Thanksgiving to hang on our tree that Christmas.  This was our first!  Our first married Christmas was our first Christmas together.  Jason and I went on our first date in April of 1998, got engaged on that Fourth of July, and were married about four months later in mid-November.  I remember how exciting it was celebrating our first holidays together as husband and wife!  This hung from a much smaller tree in our apartment back then.  Times have changed, along with the tree this beloved ornament hangs from, yet it will always be the most special ornament on our tree!

My Aunt Ednah made our wedding cake and personalized this ornament in its likeness!

Shortly after we got married I mentioned to Jason how much I'd always wanted to see The Nutcracker. That December he surprised me with really great seats at a performance in the most stunning venue in our area.  We got all dressed up and enjoyed every moment of that special Christmas date!  I should add that we were poor 20 year olds at the time, making the gift all that more special and grand!

This is an ornament from my childhood.  These type of ornaments hung on my parents' and grandparents' trees.  It takes me back to the Christmases of my youth each time I see it!  Did you have any ornaments like this on your tree growing up?

Princess' 1st Christmas!  The precious, beautiful baby girl who made me a mommy!  What a Christmas season that was!  She was born less than a month before Christmas.  We certainly had much to celebrate that year!  Jason hung pink Christmas lights on the bushes in front of our home that year in celebration and announcement that our baby girl had arrived!  Such sweet memories this ornament represents!

Little One arrived completing our family!  What a joy she brought to us all that Christmas!  The photo was taken on her first halloween (just a few weeks after she was born) when both of our girls dressed as princesses.  I couldn't find a newborn costume so she wore an adorable princess onesie and crown baby cap.  What a precious year that was!

Little One made this shortly after turning 6 years old.  It makes me smile each time I see it!  She was so small that she says while making this she imagined it would cover the whole tree!  It never quite did that, but it does hold a sweet and special spot all these years later.

Black Belt!  This ornament was actually given to Little One in congratulations of earning her black belt to be displayed on a stand.  However, we thought it'd be even more special if we used it on our tree each Christmas! I couldn't be more proud of her for achieving that goal!  Small, but mighty is our littlest sweetie!

My husband is my personal handy man and along with this ornament he became an honorary graduate of Handyman Academy! ;)  I am so proud of him for all the effort that he puts into maintaining our home! Each time we experience problems, whether it be automotive or plumbing, he does his best to fix it and only hires help if absolutely necessary.  I picked up this ornament for him a few years back when we had a ton of home catastrophes that he tended to.  When I see this ornament my heart is filled with gratitude for the ways he provides for our family, both monetarily and physically.  What a husband God has blessed me with!

Our Animal Print Mickey ornament was purchased during our first stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge as Disney Vacation Club Members.  I bought one for us and one for my parents who joined us on that memorable WDW vacation.  Seeing it brings back a flood of magical memories and is a reminder of my number one Disney dream of joining DVC coming true!

Christmas Present

New ornaments added to our collection this Christmas

As previously mentioned, my parents gift us a new ornament annually.  This year they gave Jason and I the cutest vintage Mickey and Minnie ornaments!  I couldn't adore them any more than I do!

Lake Okoboji, one of our favorite spots in our home state of Iowa!  We enjoyed a lovely stay there in June and I knew picking up this sweet ornament would remind us of all that fun in the sun!

Walt Disney's hometown of Marceline, Missouri has been on our travel wishlist for many years.  We were overjoyed to spend a day there over the summer!  This beautiful ornament features a commemorative stamp honoring Walt Disney, "Marceline's Favorite Son".  The stamp was released at a First Day of Issue ceremony in Marceline on September 11, 1968, one day before it's nationwide release.  I'm so happy to have added
such a neat historical piece to our Disney collection!

This year I had the pleasure of checking something off my bucket list when we saw the world's largest tree at Sequoia National Park!  We split that day between Sequoia & King's Canyon National Parks.  I didn't know much about King's Canyon before our trip, but I'm so glad my trip researching pro of a hubby learned about it and took us there, because it was absolutely amazing!  This ornament reminds me of one of my favorite days of 2016!  I look forward to sharing all the details from it in a trip report next year!

When choosing an ornament from Disneyland Jason spotted this one and it sums up our trip so well as we were there during Halloween season!  Disneyland transforms Haunted Mansion into a Nightmare Before Christmas extravaganza for the entire holiday season.  It was jaw dropping to see the attention to detail and a completely different experience for us since Disney World doesn't make over their rides in holiday themes.  This ornament reminds me of Halloween fun at Disneyland and of much I long to return for Christmastime at Disneyland someday!  It can wait a bit though as next Christmas season we'll be "home" at Walt Disney World! *Happy sigh!*

The last ornament I'm sharing is one featuring some of our favorite memories from this year's family vacation.  Like those in the Christmas Past section above, in years to come it is sure to remind us of precious family memories!  My heart is full!

Christmas Future

Stay Tuned! We'll see what 2017 and beyond have in store! ;)

For anyone interested, our tree is a Slim Killington Pine.  We got it at Menards several years back and I still love it!  It doesn't take up much space, yet feels like a full size tree.  Its branches also look a lot more realistic than some artificial  trees we've had in the past.  O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree, how lovely are your branches!

Thanks so much for stopping by today!  I'd love to hear about your favorite Christmas ornament(s) in the comments below! Merry Christmas, dear readers & cherished friends!

Five Loves on Friday

Happy Friday!  Can you believe that one week from today is Christmas, and the following Friday we'll welcome in a fresh new year?!  I hope you're all soaking up these precious few and festive days we have left of 2015!  We sure have been!  Here are a handful of highlights from our week...

1.  My Aunt Ednah's Annual Christmas Open House

It was a sweet day catching up with family in her beautifully decorated holiday home!

2.  Date Night

My parents invited all the grandkids to come back to their house after the party, giving Jason and I a much appreciated date night!  We grabbed some dinner and settled in for a movie night.  Ant-man was a good mix of action and laughs, but the best part of the evening was simply having a few uninterrupted hours snuggled up next to my man!

3.  Time to Celebrate!

Sunday we headed to my sister-in-law's house for our family Christmas celebration.  We enjoyed delicious eats, chatting and laughing with loved ones, gift giving, and watching some cute cousins play together!  Good times!

4.  Daughter Date Night

This week Jason and I each enjoyed some special one on one time with our girls.  He took Princess out on a dad/daughter dinner date, while Little One and I enjoyed a fun night in watching Christmas shows and stringing popcorn garlands!  Mine now decorates the purple Disney Princess tree in her bedroom, and hers added an appropriate touch to our home theater Christmas Tree.

5.  I won!

Do you remember Crystal Pepsi from the early '90s?  Well, Pepsi produced another 13,000 6-packs for a giveaway and I am among the winners!  Woohoo!  While they haven't officially announced a date when we'll see this nostalgic clear soda back on store shelves, they've hinted at a possible return around June.  Meanwhile, I can hardly wait to treat my taste buds to a blast from the past!  Merry Christmas to me! :)

Thanks so much for stopping by for a visit today, friends!  Do you have any fun weekend plans?  We've got two things on our calendar that I've been really looking forward to!  Tonight we're going out for one of my favorite traditions, driving around looking at beautiful Christmas lights while listening to Christmas music.  *happy sigh*  There's also a little something my family has been counting down to for months now, seeing Star Wars:  The Force Awakens!  It should be a weekend to remember!  I hope you enjoy every lit'l bit of yours too!
